Laser hair removal should only be performed at a medical institution.
In the past, permanent hair removal using electric needles was done in esthetic clinics, but every treatment was painful, very inefficient, and usually took several years or more. It was also risky and damaging to the skin and caused many problems, so it is now rarely used. The mainstream of esthetic hair removal today is what is called optical hair removal, but even though it is called “hair removal” in a nutshell, most of it amounts to “hair reduction” or “temporary hair removal”. Compared to lasers, they are less selective to hair, and if irradiated too strongly, the risk increases, leading to burns and other problems, and if applied too weakly, the effect is low, so it does not lead to permanent hair removal. The difference is especially noticeable in men’s beards, where the hair follicles are very strong. With laser hair removal, there are some differences depending on the patient and the part of the body, but after 5 to 6 treatments about every 2 months, there is almost no need for self-treatment. However, for areas such as men’s beards, where the hair quality is strong, the hair volume is large, and the hair follicles are strong, it is necessary to repeat the treatment about every other month. Each treatment takes about 5 minutes per side for the armpits, depending on the area to be irradiated. After the treatment, you may experience some redness, puffiness along with the pores, and a burning sensation, but this usually subsides with post-treatment cooling and the application of medication.

- How can hair removal be done with a laser?
- When a laser with a wavelength that is easily absorbed by the black color is irradiated to the hair, the light absorbed by the melanin in the hair is converted into heat, and this heat destroys the hair follicle. This heat destroys the hair follicle, which contains hair stem cells that regenerate hair, so when the hair follicle is damaged, the hair cannot regrow from the same follicle again.
- What kind of laser do you use for hair removal?
- We use two types of lasers: the alexandrite laser and the diode laser. Both of these lasers are approved as medical devices and are highly safe. In addition, we select and use different machines according to the area to be treated so that we can provide the most efficient and appropriate treatment.
- Is hair removal a one-time procedure?
- Laser hair removal is only effective if the papillae, which are the source of the hair, do not contain melanin pigment. Since hairs have a hair cycle and there are times when melanin is not formed in the papillae, it is not possible to destroy all the hairs with a single session of irradiation, so multiple sessions are necessary.
- Is it possible to remove hair from areas with thin skin, such as the area around the throat?
- We use a laser hair removal system that can be fine-tuned according to the skin tone, thickness of hair, and other skin characteristics. As a result, we can safely and effectively treat delicate skin areas and darker areas ( areola, V-line, etc.) compared to other lasers. There is no part of the body that cannot be treated at our clinic.
- I know it’s early, but can a 6-year-old child get permanent hair removal?
- 6Even if it is technically possible to treat a 6-year-old child, it is difficult for them to tolerate the pain and it is dangerous if they move during the treatment. It is difficult to recommend this treatment because it is not expected to be effective enough to be worth enduring the treatment only once. If you are not looking for permanent hair removal, but want to get rid of the problem of having to shave every day, or if you want to get rid of the noticeable shaving marks after shaving, there is a method called laser toning that removes the hair from the roots and prevents it from growing back for a season or so. The laser causes the hair to fade and become white, and once it falls out, it will not grow back for about one season. This method is less painful, and if anesthetic cream is applied, even children may be able to have the treatment. It is a treatment with little burden on the skin and almost no downtime, so you don’t have to be worried.
- I have a question about facial hair removal. Is it possible to have the procedure done around the eyebrows and above the eyelids?
- We do offer facial hair removal around the eyebrows. For the upper eyelids, we pull the skin upward, avoiding the area above the black eyeball, and protect the eye area with goggles. This usually works to eliminate the area of hair growth, so there is no need to worry.

After listening to the patient’s concerns and wishes, the doctor will examine the skin condition, color, and hair texture, and explain the treatment.
Before irradiation, if there are any hairs left, they will be removed with a shaver.
Under the supervision of a licensed professional, test irradiation will be performed to determine the setup while monitoring the skin’s condition, hair texture, and reaction, and then the entire area is irradiated. The round spots are applied one after another as if they were tightly packed. There will be a momentary stimulation like being popped with a rubber band, and the hair will fall out, but it is not painful.
Cooling and topical anti-inflammatory medication will be applied. Since mild redness may remain for a few days after treatment, please take the medication home and apply it while the redness is still present. Also, please avoid using a razor on the treatment area for a few days. Please use sunscreen to prevent sunburn during the treatment period.
