Getting NIPT in Sapporo: How Hiro Clinic Differs from Certified Facilities

If you are considering NIPT in Sapporo, it helps to understand the difference between certified and non-certified facilities before choosing where to test. Hiro Clinic NIPT Sapporo Ekimae Clinic is a non-certified facility. Comparing five points — test scope, age restrictions, referral letters, result speed, and cost — will help you find the facility that suits you best.

Certified Facilities vs. Hiro Clinic Sapporo Ekimae (Non-Certified Facility): Comparison Table

The main differences between the two come down to testing flexibility and ease of access. The table below summarizes how to choose when testing in Sapporo.

ComparisonCertified FacilitiesHiro Clinic Sapporo Ekimae (Non-Certified Facility)
Test scopeMainly the three trisomies (21, 18, 13). Fetal sex is not tested. The three basic conditions plus all chromosomes, microdeletions/duplications (up to 143 types), and fetal sex.
Age restrictionOften limited to mothers aged 35 or older at delivery. No age restriction. All pregnant women are eligible.
Referral letterUsually requires a referral from your regular obstetrician. No referral required. You can be tested once a fetal heartbeat is confirmed.
Result speedTypically 1–2 weeks, as samples are often sent overseas. In partnership with a domestic testing institution (Tokyo Health Inspection Center), results in about 5 days on average (as fast as 2 days).
CostVaries by facility.Plans start in the ¥60,000s for the three basic conditions, up to full-coverage plans.
Testing methodGenerally requires an in-clinic visit. In addition to in-clinic visits, an at-home “Home NIPT” option is also available.

No Difference in Testing Accuracy

There is no difference in testing accuracy between certified and non-certified facilities. Some people worry that accuracy might be lower at a non-certified facility, but there is no need for concern.

Most certified facilities in Japan use Illumina’s “VeriSeq NIPT Solution V2.” Hiro Clinic was the first in Japan to introduce this same system, and testing is carried out to the same standard.

About the Testing Institution in Charge: Tokyo Health Inspection Center

NIPT at Sapporo Ekimae Clinic is carried out in partnership with a domestic testing institution. The institution in charge is the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center.”

The Tokyo Health Inspection Center is a testing institution that was accredited as a certified NIPT facility from 2022 to 2024. Because testing is carried out in partnership with this domestic institution, results are typically delivered in about 5 days on average, as fast as 2 days. This shorter wait is one of the reasons patients in Sapporo choose Hiro Clinic.

Why Choose Sapporo Ekimae Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions about Hiro Clinic Sapporo Ekimae Clinic

Q1. Where is the nearest bus stop?

The nearest bus stop is “Sapporo Ekimae” or “Sapporo Ekimae (Tokyu-mae),” served by Hokkaido Chuo Bus and other operators, about a 1-minute walk from the clinic.
The clinic is also about a 1-minute walk from the south exit of JR Sapporo Station and from Exit 9 of the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line “Sapporo Station.” Access from all these transit points is very convenient, so you can choose whichever route suits your condition best.

Q2. Is there a lot of snow around the clinic in winter? I’m worried about slipping.

Yes, this area receives snowfall and accumulation in winter.
Our premises and the area around the main entrance are regularly cleared of snow and equipped with snow-melting facilities such as road heating.
However, the surrounding sidewalks can still be slippery, so please wear non-slip winter footwear when visiting during the winter months.

Q3. Is there an underground passage from the station? Can I get there without getting wet from rain or snow?

The clinic is not directly connected to the station, but you can use the “Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway (Chi-Ka-Ho)” from Sapporo Station.
Coming up from Exit 9 of the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line minimizes the distance you need to walk outdoors.
Even on days with bad weather, snow, or strong sun, you can reach the clinic relatively comfortably without worrying too much about your footing.

Q4. Can I enter the clinic with a wheelchair or a stroller? Are there stairs or steps?

You can bring a stroller inside, but there are some steps within the clinic.
Our staff will assist you on arrival, so please feel free to contact us in advance by phone if you have any concerns about mobility or footing.
Please note that the elevator to our floor is somewhat narrow, so twin strollers may not fit.
We also provide a baby bed in the restroom, so visitors with small children can feel at ease.

Q5. This is my first visit and I’m worried about getting lost. Is there a landmark nearby?

Our clinic is on the 3rd floor of the “N Kita 3 Nishi 3 Building,” on the corner diagonally across the intersection from “Sapporo Tokyu Department Store.”
“Joko Atom” occupies the 1st floor of the same building, which is a useful landmark.
If you do get lost along the way, please call the clinic and our staff will guide you.

Q6. I’d like to come by car. Is there an affiliated parking lot?

We do not have our own free affiliated parking lot, but if you come by car, please use the nearby “Marugen Parking” (Address: Kita 3 Jo Nishi 3-chome 1, Chuo-ku, Sapporo / Tel: 011-251-4638).
We provide a 1-hour free parking ticket for use at this lot — please show your parking ticket at the clinic reception.
※Please note that parking fees at any other nearby lot are the patient’s own responsibility.

Q7. Are there places to eat or shop near the station after my test?

Yes, plenty. Our clinic is within a 5-minute walk of Sapporo Station, so you’ll find many nearby commercial facilities, including “Daimaru Sapporo,” “Sapporo Stellar Place,” and “JR Tower,” which connect directly to the station, as well as “Sapporo Tokyu Department Store” diagonally across from the clinic.
Since the test itself, from reception to blood draw, is usually finished in a relatively short time, you can enjoy shopping or lunch afterward if you’re feeling well.

Q8. I have severe morning sickness. Are there many stairs between the station and the clinic?

If you use the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line, there are stairs at the nearest exit, Exit 9.
If stairs are difficult for you, you can instead take the flat route from the JR Sapporo Station ticket gate to street level, with no stairs involved.
Our building also has an elevator, so you can reach the 3rd floor without physical strain.
If you are feeling unwell due to morning sickness, please come at whatever pace is comfortable for you.

Q9. What are your clinic hours? Can I visit after work or on weekends?

Our clinic hours are 10:00–13:00 and 14:30–18:00.
We are open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so patients who are busy with work on weekdays, or who want to visit together with a partner on the weekend, can book with peace of mind.
(We see patients on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; we are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please check our online booking page, as we may also close temporarily on other occasions.)

Q10. Can I be tested on the same day without an appointment?

To minimize waiting time and ensure a smooth visit for every patient, we operate on a fully reservation-based system. Same-day visits may be possible if a slot is available, but depending on how full the schedule is, your wait could be considerably long.
To reduce the burden on you, we recommend booking in advance through our online reservation system whenever possible.
Same-day bookings are also accepted, so please feel free to contact the clinic with any questions.

Q11. Is the clinic easy to reach from other areas of Hokkaido or from further away?

Yes. As the only Hokkaido location among Hiro Clinic’s 10 directly operated clinics nationwide, we welcome many patients not only from within Sapporo but from across Hokkaido.
The clinic is about a 1-minute walk from the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line “Sapporo Station” and about a 5-minute walk from JR “Sapporo Station,” making it accessible from multiple train lines.
If you’re traveling from further away, we recommend booking with plenty of time to spare and planning your schedule around how you feel before and after the test.

Q12. What should I do next if my test result comes back positive?

NIPT is a non-definitive screening test that assesses the likelihood of a fetal chromosomal condition, so a positive result needs to be confirmed with a definitive test such as amniocentesis.
At Hiro Clinic, we provide genetic counseling from board-certified obstetricians and clinical genetics specialists, along with a program that covers up to ¥300,000 (tax included) of amniocentesis costs, depending on your plan.
Sapporo Ekimae Clinic offers the same level of support, so please don’t face a positive result alone — talk to our staff or doctors first.

Q13. What does NIPT cost in Sapporo?

At Sapporo Ekimae Clinic, you can choose a plan that matches the scope of testing you want.
Plans focused on the three basic conditions (trisomy 21, 18, and 13) start in the ¥60,000s, with full-coverage plans available that also check all chromosomes and microdeletion/duplication conditions, depending on your budget.
If the result is positive, our “Amniocentesis Support” program also covers up to ¥300,000 of amniocentesis costs.

Q14. Is Hiro Clinic Sapporo Ekimae Clinic a certified facility?

Sapporo Ekimae Clinic is a non-certified facility.
However, the Tokyo Health Inspection Center, which carries out the testing, is a testing institution that was accredited as a certified NIPT facility from 2022 to 2024. There is no difference in testing accuracy compared with certified facilities.
The features of a non-certified facility include being able to test without age restrictions or a referral letter, and access to a wider range of testing items, including fetal sex and microdeletions.
