Getting NIPT in Fukuoka/Hakata: How Hiro Clinic Differs from Certified Facilities

If you’re considering NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) in Fukuoka or Hakata, it helps to understand the difference between certified and non-certified facilities before choosing where to go. Hiro Clinic NIPT Hakata Ekimae Clinic is a non-certified facility. Comparing five points—testing scope, age limits, referral letters, result speed, and cost—makes it easier to see which option suits you.

Certified Facilities vs. Non-Certified Facilities (Hiro Clinic): Comparison Table

The two options mainly differ in how much flexibility you have in testing and how easy it is to get an appointment. The table below summarizes the choices available in Fukuoka and Hakata.

ComparisonCertified FacilitiesHiro Clinic NIPT Hakata Ekimae Clinic (Non-Certified)
Testing scopeMainly limited to the 3 core trisomies (21, 18, 13). Fetal sex not covered.Covers the 3 core conditions plus all-chromosome testing and microdeletion/duplication testing (up to 143 conditions), as well as fetal sex.
Age limitOften restricted to expectant mothers aged 35 and above at delivery. No age restriction. Open to all expectant mothers.
Referral letterUsually requires a referral from your regular obstetrician. No referral needed. You can be tested once a fetal heartbeat is confirmed.
Result speedTypically 1–2 weeks, as samples are often sent overseas. In partnership with a domestic testing institution (Tokyo Health Inspection Center), results in about 5 days on average (as fast as 2).
CostVaries by facility.Plans start in the ¥60,000s for the 3 core conditions, up to full-coverage plans.
How to testTesting is generally done in person.In-person testing, plus an at-home option (“Ouchi NIPT”) you can complete without visiting the clinic.

    No Difference in Testing Accuracy

There is no difference in testing accuracy between certified and non-certified facilities. Some people worry that accuracy might be lower at a non-certified facility, but there is no need for concern.

Most certified facilities in Japan use Illumina’s VeriSeq NIPT Solution V2. Hiro Clinic was the first in Japan to introduce this same system, and testing is carried out to the same standard.

About the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center,” Which Handles Testing

NIPT testing at Hakata Ekimae Clinic is carried out in partnership with a domestic testing institution. The institution that handles testing is the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center.”

The Tokyo Health Inspection Center is a testing institution that was certified as an NIPT-certified facility from 2022 to 2024. Because we work with a domestic testing institution, we can deliver results in about 5 days on average, as fast as 2 days. Shortening the anxious wait for results is one reason expectant mothers in Fukuoka and Hakata choose us.

Why Choose Hakata Ekimae Clinic in Fukuoka/Hakata

Hakata Ekimae Clinic is chosen for three reasons: accessibility, track record, and support. As the only directly-run clinic in Kyushu, we have built an environment that is easy to visit even for people with busy schedules.

    • About a 6-minute walk from the Chikushi Exit of JR Hakata Station, on the 5th floor of the “OAK Hakata Building.”
    • Over 75,000 NIPT tests performed.
    • Staffed by obstetric specialists and board-certified clinical genetics specialists.
    • Our “Amniocentesis Support” program covers up to ¥300,000 in amniocentesis costs if your result is positive.
    • No age restrictions or referral letters required. An at-home option (“Ouchi NIPT”) is also available.

For more on how the NIPT certification system itself works, see our guide, What Is an NIPT-Certified Facility?

Getting NIPT in Fukuoka/Hakata | Hiro Clinic NIPT Hakata Ekimae Clinic

Our clinic is on the 5th floor of the “OAK Hakata Building,” about a 6-minute walk from the Chikushi Exit of JR Hakata Station. The building has an elevator, so you can reach us without navigating stairs, even with a stroller or during times when you are not feeling well.

Hiro Clinic operates 10 directly-run clinics nationwide, and Hakata Ekimae Clinic is our only location in the Kyushu region. In addition to patients from within Fukuoka City, we welcome expectant mothers from across Kyushu, including Kitakyushu, Kurume, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima, who travel by Shinkansen or highway bus. From Saga Station, it is about 40 minutes by limited express; from Kumamoto Station, about 2 hours 25 minutes via conventional rail lines.

The area around Hakata Station has plenty of shopping, including “JR Hakata City” and “Hakata Deitos,” so you can relax before or after your test.

If you are considering non-invasive prenatal testing in Kyushu, we hope you will consider our clinic, directly connected to Hakata Station. At Hakata Ekimae Clinic, in addition to the standard trisomy 13, 18, and 21 tests, you can choose all-chromosome testing, testing for 143 microdeletion/duplication conditions, single-gene disorder testing, and carrier screening. Because testing is completed at a domestic testing institution (Tokyo Health Inspection Center), results are typically available in 2 to 5 days. We also provide, free of charge, Hiro Clinic’s own “positive score” and “positive predictive value” reports based on more than 75,000 domestic test results, so you can review concrete figures before deciding your next step.

There are two nearby bus stops:

    • · “Godo Chosha-mae” — about a 2-minute walk (the closer and more convenient option)
    • · “Hakata Eki Chikushi-guchi” — about a 6-minute walk

Buses departing from Hakata Station run fairly frequently on most routes, so you can choose a way to travel that suits how you are feeling. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about directions.

Q2. Does it snow much around the clinic in winter? I am worried about slippery footing.

Snowfall around Hakata Station is very rare, even in winter, so you generally do not need to worry about slippery footing.
Our clinic is about a 6-minute walk from Hakata Station along a major street, so you can visit as usual with peace of mind.
That said, please take care on rare occasions of bad weather or when roads may freeze during cold mornings and evenings.

Q3. Is the clinic connected to the station by an underground passage? Can I get there without getting wet in rain or snow?

We are sorry, but our clinic is not directly connected to Hakata Station’s underground passage.
You will need to walk above ground (about 6 minutes), so please bring an umbrella or rain gear if you are visiting in rain or snow.

Q4. Can I enter with a wheelchair or stroller? Are there stairs or steps?

The building has a fully equipped elevator, so you can go straight up to the 5th floor.
Anyone who is not feeling well, or using a stroller or wheelchair, can enter without worrying about steps.
Our staff are happy to help, so please do not hesitate to ask.

Q5. This is my first visit and I am worried about getting lost. Are there any landmarks nearby?

Our clinic is about a 6-minute walk from Hakata Station (Chikushi Exit), on the 5th floor of the “OAK Hakata Building.”
Nearby landmarks include “FamilyMart Hakata Ekihigashi 2-chome” and the area near “Hotel Nikko Fukuoka Hakata Ekimae (formerly Hotel Centraza Hakata).”
If you are nearby but cannot find us, please call and our staff will guide you.

Q6. I would like to come by car. Is there an affiliated parking lot?

We do not have our own free parking, but if you are coming by car, you can use the nearby affiliated parking lots “Seiwa Park Hakata Higashi 3” and “Seiwa Park Hakata Eki Higashi A.”
Please be sure to show your parking ticket at reception, and we will provide a coupon for one hour of parking.
※Any parking fees beyond that, or fees at other parking lots, are the patient’s responsibility.

Q7. Are there places to eat or shop near the station after my test?

Yes, plenty. Within walking distance of our clinic, Hakata Station offers “JR Hakata City (Amu Plaza Hakata and Hakata Hankyu),” “Hakata Deitos,” and the “Hakata Bus Terminal,” with a wide range of restaurants and shopping.
You can take your time to enjoy Hakata’s food and shopping before or after your test.

Q8. I am in a period of bad morning sickness. Are there many stairs between the station and the clinic?

The building our clinic is in has a fully equipped elevator, so you can go up without using any stairs.
The bus stops around Hakata Station also have no stairs.
If you arrive by JR or subway, the stations have escalators and elevators, so you will not need to use stairs there either. Please use the barrier-free facilities near you and take your time getting here.

Q9. What time is the clinic open until? Can I visit after work or on weekends?

Our clinic is open from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:00. We are also open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so it is easy to book an appointment even if you are busy with work on weekdays, or if you would like to come with your partner on a weekend. (Please note we are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and may have occasional temporary closures; please check our online booking page.)

Q10. Can I get an NIPT test at Hakata Ekimae Clinic as a walk-in, without an appointment?

To keep waiting times to a minimum for expectant mothers and ensure a smooth visit, we operate on a “fully by appointment” basis. Same-day visits may be possible if slots are available, but depending on how busy we are, your wait could be considerably long.
To reduce the burden on you, we recommend booking in advance through our online reservation system whenever possible.
We do accept same-day bookings, so please contact us if you have any questions.

Q11. Can I visit from outside Fukuoka Prefecture or from elsewhere in Kyushu?

Yes, many expectant mothers travel to us from across Kyushu. Our clinic is Hiro Clinic’s only location in the Kyushu region, out of 10 directly-run clinics nationwide.
From Saga Station, it is about 40 minutes by limited express; from Kumamoto Station, about 2 hours 25 minutes via conventional rail lines; and from Nagasaki Station, about 2 hours by highway bus or limited express.
If you are traveling from farther away, we recommend booking with some flexibility and planning your schedule around how you are feeling before and after the test.

Q12. If my result comes back positive, what should I do next?

NIPT is a non-diagnostic screening test that assesses the likelihood of a chromosomal condition, so a positive result needs to be confirmed with a diagnostic test such as amniocentesis.
If your result is positive, our support plans can cover up to ¥300,000 (tax included) of your amniocentesis costs, depending on your plan.
We also offer genetic counseling with a physician, so please feel free to talk to our staff about next steps after you receive your result.

Q13. What is the approximate cost of NIPT testing in Fukuoka/Hakata?

At Hakata Ekimae Clinic, you can choose a plan based on the scope of testing you would like.
Plans focused on the 3 core conditions (trisomy 21, 18, and 13) start in the ¥60,000s, up to full-coverage plans covering all-chromosome and microdeletion/duplication testing; choose based on your budget.
If your result is positive, our “Amniocentesis Support” can also cover up to ¥300,000 of amniocentesis costs.

Q14. Is Hiro Clinic NIPT Hakata Ekimae Clinic a certified facility?

Hakata Ekimae Clinic is a non-certified facility.
However, the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center,” which handles our testing, is a testing institution that was certified as an NIPT-certified facility from 2022 to 2024. There is no difference in testing accuracy compared with certified facilities.
Being able to test without age restrictions or a referral letter, and covering a wider range of items such as fetal sex and microdeletions, are among the advantages of a non-certified facility.
