Key Requirements

The requirements of ISO 17025 are divided into two main categories:

1. Management Requirements
Focus on organizational and operational processes to ensure efficient management of the laboratory:

  • Quality management system: The laboratory must establish, document, and maintain a quality management system, including quality policies, objectives, and management reviews.
  • Record management: Specifies how testing and calibration data, reports, and records should be managed, including retention periods and protection methods.
  • Customer service: Processes must be in place to address customer requirements and expectations effectively.

2. Technical Requirements
Focus on the technical aspects of testing and calibration to ensure scientific accuracy and reliability:

  • Personnel competence: Staff performing testing or calibration must have the appropriate education, training, skills, and experience.
  • Equipment and environmental conditions: Equipment must be properly installed, maintained, and operated under controlled environmental conditions to avoid impacting results.
  • Method validation: Testing and calibration methods must be appropriately selected and validated, typically through the use of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Measurement traceability: Measurement results must be traceable to internationally recognized standards.
  • Uncertainty estimation: The uncertainty associated with testing and calibration results must be estimated and reported.

Reporting of results: Results must be reported accurately and clearly, with all necessary details included.

ISO 17025 Accreditation Process

To achieve ISO 17025 accreditation, laboratories typically follow these steps:

  1. Self-assessment: Evaluate the quality management system and technical competence against ISO 17025 requirements.
  2. Application: Submit an application for accreditation to the relevant accreditation body.
  3. Assessment: Undergo a comprehensive review, including document review and on-site assessments.
  4. Corrective actions: Address and resolve any nonconformities identified during the assessment.

Accreditation: Accreditation is granted once all requirements have been met.
