Getting NIPT in Yokohama: How Hiro Clinic Differs from Certified Facilities

If you are considering NIPT in Yokohama, it helps to understand the difference between a “certified facility” and a “non-certified facility” before choosing where to go. Hiro Clinic NIPT Yokohama Ekimae is a non-certified facility. Comparing five points – testing scope, age limits, referral letters, turnaround time, and cost – will help you see which option suits you best.

Certified Facilities vs. Hiro Clinic (Non-Certified): Comparison Table

The main differences come down to how much testing flexibility you get and how easy it is to be seen. The table below sums up the choice for Yokohama.

Comparison pointCertified facilityHiro Clinic NIPT Yokohama Ekimae (non-certified)
Testing scopeMainly limited to trisomy 21, 18 and 13. Fetal sex is usually not disclosed.Covers the three core trisomies plus all chromosomes, microdeletion/duplication syndromes (up to 143 types), and fetal sex.
Age limitOften restricted to mothers aged 35 or older at delivery. No age limit. Open to all pregnant women.
Referral letterUsually requires a referral from your regular OB-GYN.No referral needed. You can be tested once a fetal heartbeat is confirmed.
Turnaround timeTypically one to two weeks, as samples are often sent overseas. In partnership with a domestic testing institution, results in around 5 days on average, as fast as 2 days.
CostVaries by facility.Plans start in the JPY 60,000 range for the 3 core conditions, up to full-coverage plans.
How to be testedAn in-clinic visit is the standard option.Available in-clinic, or entirely from home with the “Home NIPT” option.

There Is No Difference in Testing Accuracy

There is no difference in testing accuracy between certified and non-certified facilities. Some people worry that accuracy might be lower at a non-certified facility, but there is no need for concern.

Most certified facilities in Japan use Illumina’s “VeriSeq NIPT Solution V2.” Hiro Clinic was the first in Japan to introduce this same system, and testing is carried out to the same standard.

About the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center,” Which Handles Testing

NIPT at Yokohama Ekimae is carried out in partnership with a domestic testing institution. The institution that handles testing is the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center.”

The Tokyo Health Inspection Center is a testing institution that was accredited as a certified NIPT facility from 2022 to 2024. Because we work with this domestic testing institution, results can be delivered in around 5 days on average, as fast as 2 days. Shortening the anxious wait for results is one of the reasons this clinic is chosen in Yokohama.

Why Choose Yokohama Ekimae Clinic

Yokohama Ekimae Clinic is chosen for three reasons: access, track record, and support. As the only directly-operated Hiro Clinic location in Kanagawa Prefecture, it offers an easy-to-reach environment.

  • About a 1-minute walk from Exit 6 of Yokohama Station on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line.
  • A track record of more than 75,000 NIPT tests performed.
  • Testing is carried out in partnership with the domestic testing institution “Tokyo Health Inspection Center,” overseen by Dr. Hiroshi Oka, who holds Laboratory Director qualifications, with a system that keeps everything from blood collection to result reporting inside Japan.
  • An “Amniocentesis Support” programme that covers up to JPY 300,000 of amniocentesis costs if the result is positive.
  • The only directly-operated Hiro Clinic location in Kanagawa Prefecture, reachable from Kawasaki, Fujisawa, Atsugi and other areas across the prefecture.
  • No age limit and no referral letter required. The “Home NIPT” option, completed entirely at home, is also available.

Frequently Asked Questions about “Hiro Clinic NIPT Yokohama Ekimae”

Q1. Where is the nearest bus stop?

Our clinic has very good access from every mode of transport, so you can reach us comfortably by public transport.

  • By bus: about 2–3 minutes on foot from the “Yokohama Ekimae” stop
  • By subway: about 1 minute on foot from Exit 6 of “Yokohama Station” on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line
  • By JR or private railway: about 5 minutes on foot from the Minami-Nishi Exit of “Yokohama Station”

Buses run frequently, so you can choose the option that suits how you are feeling. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about directions.

Q2. Does it snow a lot around here in winter? I’m worried about the footing.

Heavy snow accumulation is uncommon in Yokohama in winter, but depending on the weather, snow or icy pavement can occur.
If you are visiting in winter, please take care with your footing, wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, and allow extra time to reach us.

Q3. Is there an underground passage from the station? Can I avoid the rain or snow?

We’re sorry to say our clinic is not directly connected to the underground passage at Yokohama Station.
You will need to walk above ground from the station.
It is only about a 1-minute walk from Exit 6 of the Municipal Subway Blue Line, but in rain or snow, please bring an umbrella or rain gear and take care with your footing.

Q4. Can I enter with a wheelchair or stroller? Are there stairs or steps?

The clinic has a barrier-free design, so you can enter as you are. However, there are a few steps in front of the elevator.
Our staff will assist you when you visit, so please contact us in advance or simply let us know when you arrive.
Our whole team is here to help you feel at ease during your visit.

Q5. It’s my first time visiting and I’m worried about getting lost. Are there any landmarks nearby?

Turn left at the “Yokohama Station West Exit Post Office,” and after passing “Mouko Tanmen Nakamoto,” you will see a river.
The clinic is on the 4th floor of “Sotetsu Minami-Saiwai No. 15 Building (former No. 2 New Yokohama Building),” marked by the staircase on that corner.
If you get lost on the way, please feel free to call us. Our staff will guide you clearly.

Q6. I’d like to come by car. Is there an affiliated parking lot?

We do not have a dedicated free affiliated parking lot, but if you use the “Yokohama Station West Exit Underground Parking,” you are eligible for a parking discount.
Please bring the parking ticket issued when you enter to our reception desk, and we will provide a voucher for one hour of parking.
*If you use any other parking facility, the parking fee will be your own responsibility.

Q7. Are there places to eat or shop near the station after the test?

Yes, plenty. The area around Yokohama Station has many shops and restaurants directly connected to the station, including “Joinus” and “Yokohama Takashimaya.”
The test itself is relatively quick, so if you are feeling well, you’re welcome to enjoy a meal or some shopping around Yokohama Station before or after your visit.

Q8. I have severe morning sickness. Are there many stairs between the station and the clinic?

If you arrive by JR or subway, escalators and elevators are available inside the station, so you can reach ground level without using stairs.
There are a few steps at the entrance of the building where the clinic is located, but there is an elevator just beyond them that will take you to our floor on the 4th level.
We understand this can be a difficult time with morning sickness, so please don’t hesitate to ask our staff for help if you are concerned.

Q9. Until what time are you open? Can I visit after work or on weekends?

Our clinic hours are 10:00–13:00 and 14:30–18:00.
We are also open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so pregnant women who are busy with work on weekdays, or who would like to visit together with a partner on a weekend, can book with confidence.
(We are open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays; closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Please check our website for the latest schedule.)

Q10. Can I be tested at Yokohama Ekimae Clinic the same day without a reservation?

To keep waiting times to a minimum and make sure every visit goes smoothly, we operate on a “reservation only” basis. Same-day visits may be possible if a slot is available, but depending on how busy we are, the wait could be quite long.
To reduce the burden on you, we recommend booking in advance through our “online reservation system” whenever possible.
Same-day bookings are still accepted, so please contact us if you have any questions.

Q11. Is it easy to visit from other parts of Kanagawa Prefecture, such as Kawasaki, Fujisawa or Atsugi?

Yes. As the only directly-operated Hiro Clinic location in Kanagawa Prefecture, we welcome many pregnant women not only from within Yokohama but from across the prefecture, including Kawasaki, Fujisawa and Atsugi.
We are about a 1-minute walk from Exit 6 of Yokohama Station on the Municipal Subway Blue Line, and about 45 minutes by car from the Tokyo area via the metropolitan expressway.
An underground route is also available in rain or snow, so please visit us with confidence.

Q12. Is there an age limit? Do both partners need to attend? From how many weeks can I be tested?

There is no age limit for NIPT at our clinic, and you can visit and book on your own, without your partner.
Testing is available from early pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat is confirmed, and we offer plans available even before 10 weeks of pregnancy.
NIPT is a non-definitive test that assesses the likelihood of certain conditions, so a doctor will explain how to interpret your results and the next steps directly at your visit. If you have any concerns about age, weeks of pregnancy, or attending alone, please feel free to reach out by phone or LINE.

Q13. What is the approximate cost of NIPT in Yokohama?

At Yokohama Ekimae Clinic, you can choose a plan based on the scope you want tested.
Plans focused on the three core conditions (trisomy 21, 18 and 13) start in the JPY 60,000 range. You can also choose a full-coverage plan that checks all chromosomes and microdeletion/duplication conditions, depending on your budget.
If the result is positive, our “Amniocentesis Support” programme is also available, covering up to JPY 300,000 of amniocentesis costs.

Q14. Is Hiro Clinic NIPT Yokohama Ekimae a certified facility?

Yokohama Ekimae Clinic is a non-certified facility.
However, the “Tokyo Health Inspection Center,” which handles testing, is a testing institution that was accredited as a certified NIPT facility from 2022 to 2024. There is no difference in testing accuracy compared with certified facilities.
Being able to test without an age limit or referral letter, and covering a wide range of items including fetal sex and microdeletions, are among the features of a non-certified facility.
